Paid Mohs technician training
Mohs Pros hires people with no lab experience as paid trainees and teaches them the bench work of a Mohs lab. You are an hourly employee from day one, working alongside experienced techs in dermatology practices, mostly across California.
How the program works
- Apply. Tell us about yourself. No résumé or lab experience needed.
- Meet the team. A short interview about reliability, attention to detail and your schedule.
- Paid bench training. You learn embedding, cutting frozen sections on a cryostat, staining and coverslipping, lab safety and quality control, step by step, until the lab director signs off on your competency.
- Work in Mohs labs. You support Mohs surgeons in client practices, with experienced techs nearby.
- Grow toward certification. We help you plan the college credits and experience HT(ASCP) requires.
What trainees do, and don't do
Under federal lab rules (CLIA), preparing slides counts as specimen processing, which trained staff with a high school diploma may do under the lab director's supervision. Grossing, mapping and inking tissue are part of the examination and need college science credits.
| As a trainee you will | Later, with college credits |
|---|---|
| Embed tissue and cut frozen sections | Gross, map and ink tissue |
| Stain (H&E) and coverslip slides | Take on more of the lab's quality work |
| Maintain the cryostat, stainer and logs | Train newer techs |
Pay and schedule
Training is paid hourly from your first day. Hours follow each lab's Mohs surgery days, and drive time between labs, mileage and meals are paid on top. Every trainee job post shows its hourly range.
Frequently asked questions
- Do I get paid during training?
- Yes. Trainees are hourly Mohs Pros employees from the first day, and all required training time is paid. Each trainee job post shows its hourly range; your exact rate is set when we make an offer.
- What do I need to start?
- A high school diploma or equivalent, reliable transport, attention to detail and steady hands. No lab experience or college degree is needed to start.
- What will I do as a trainee?
- You learn to embed tissue, cut frozen sections on a cryostat, stain and coverslip slides, and keep the lab clean and logged. Grossing, mapping and inking are reserved for staff with college science credits under federal lab rules.
- Does training cost anything?
- No. There is no fee to apply or to train.
- Can I become certified?
- Yes. Mohs Pros supports techs working toward HT(ASCP), the recognized histotechnician credential. It needs college science credits and broad histology experience, so most people get there in about 2 to 3 years while working.
